Lavender Barn, Devon
Project type
Planting Plan
Date
2024
Location
Devon
Working on this garden design project in Devon for a barn conversion was a truly enriching experience. The property, intended as a second home, required a design that was both visually stunning and easy to maintain, given that the clients wouldn’t be present year-round. With this in mind, the garden was planned around low-maintenance planting that would thrive with minimal care while offering a long flowering period, perfectly synchronized with the clients' summer visits.
Lavender became the centerpiece of the garden, chosen for its robust nature and ability to flourish in the Devon climate. Its extended blooming season, typically from early summer through late summer, ensures that the garden is in full glory whenever the clients arrive. The fragrance of the lavender is another key feature, permeating the air and creating a soothing, aromatic environment that enhances the sense of retreat and relaxation.
The design also considered the visual and sensory impact of the garden, ensuring that the soft purple hues of the lavender were complemented by other hardy, drought-resistant plants that require minimal upkeep. The overall layout included sweeping paths that guide you through the garden, with carefully placed seating areas where one can fully immerse in the serene atmosphere, surrounded by the gentle hum of bees and the soft rustle of leaves.
This project perfectly balances the need for aesthetic beauty with practical functionality, resulting in a garden that is not only a feast for the eyes but also a haven for the senses, all while being effortlessly low-maintenance.
