The garden design project in Newton Ferrers involved creating two distinct concepts to address the clients’ requirements while showcasing a creative and functional outdoor space. Both designs emphasise harmony with the site’s coastal estuary backdrop while catering too specific needs such as practical gardening, relaxation, and entertaining. Each concept ensures a seamless blend of existing features and new elements to enhance usability and aesthetic appeal.
Concept One, “Coastal Retreat,” incorporates the natural beauty of the estuary, combining modern finishes with a coastal planting palette. A shaded fernery by the kitchen creates a cool sanctuary, while the extended decking and spiral staircase offer connections between garden levels. Features like timber-framed views, ornamental gravel gardens, and a fire pit provide inviting spaces for relaxation. The working garden, complete with espalier apple trees, sleeper planters, and a greenhouse, supports functionality and sustainability.
Concept Two, “Ornamental Escape,” adopts a more decorative aesthetic with patterned tiles, terracotta pots, and perennial planting in a blue-and-white colour scheme. Built-in seating and a pergola provide intimate areas for dining and socialising, while terraced corten steel planters and layered planting offer visual interest. A hidden retreat with feature trees and a herb garden on a slope enhance the lower tiers, blending ornamental beauty with productive spaces. Both designs focus on enhancing the garden’s usability, creating a truly personalised outdoor experience.
